Current Work: Meditations, a reactive series inspired by the pursuit of silence and calm in a noisy world.
New work to be posted in April.
I have always felt a calling to move paint and color across large surfaces. I have been painting for quite a few years now, but have always given into the pressure of external forces when it comes to subject matter. As cliché as it may sound, age has predictably provided me with the courage to explore painting on my own terms. In addition, raising children has forced me to take a step back from painting the last few years, the unexpected side effect of which has been some much needed space and perspective. I am now able to create from a place of authenticity.
All of this has led me to my current series of paintings. I am intrigued and admittedly, a little put off, by modern life. The always looking down. The harsh bright light. The do, do, do and all at the same time. All the while, surrounded by chirping birds, drifting clouds, and green growing out of gray. These things oftentimes go unnoticed, or at the very least "saved" for another day. The thin, undulating space between hurry and time spent chewing slowly...this is the delicate place from which I currently draw my inspiration. Working with one brush, I let the mood or light of the current day inspire my color palette. The thoughts and emotions created by daily life fuel my movements. Color is layered until I relax into the painting and it begins to take on a life of it's own.
